Sustainability awareness talks can become stale, so this tour is a fresh perspective on what your students have been learning for years. Ride up to the 600kW wind turbine on Mt Herschel, the water and sewage treatment plants, and the island’s own solar farm, discovering the secret workings of each initiative when you stop. Guides use the island’s energy app for a visual explanation of each system, and craft stories to invoke appreciation for how the processes subtly keep the island turning.

It’s isolation from the mainland created a need for unique self-sufficiency, meaning Wadjemup, Rottnest Island became the place to spearhead innovative sustainability practices. Students can see eco-friendly essential services in action, interacting with the methods of the future.

“It’s very rare to have so many observable sustainability lessons in one location. The proximity of these huge energy transformers is something that we’re very lucky to have so close to Perth.” Liam Gauci, year 6 teacher, City Beach Primary School.
