Wadjemup Museum

From AUD $10.00
  • Duration: 30 Minutes (approx.)
  • Location: Rottnest Island, WA
  • Product code: CE010_WM
The Wadjemup Museum is an essential gateway to the island. As you walk through the historic displays - some from as far back as 40,000 years - you collect a deeper understanding of the significance of this land.
The museum walls themselves are a notable part of island history. Constructed by Aboriginal prisoners and originally used as a hay shed and granary, the museum building is a standing representation of the museum's focus, truth.
Stories of imprisonment and survival are told through artefacts, photographs, and a moving film presented by Aboriginal Elders. This kind of introduction to the island stays with you long after you return to the mainland.
The group will also weave through maritime, arts, and tourism history. The lighthouse keeper’s jacket, whale bones, dried seaweed collages; there’s a feeling here that history isn’t so far away.
